How I work

I work one-to-one with board-level executives and inspiring leaders. My work is naturally bespoke, to provide the correct support for the demanding environments in which they operate. A typical engagement would follow this four-step process:

Getting to know each other

We begin with a 45-minute no-obligation call to get to know each other and establish if we think we could work well together. There is no fee for this call.

We'll discuss:

> Where you are now
> Why you’re considering coaching
> Where you would like to be

I will clarify what coaching is (and isn’t) and my particular style – and ultimately, how I’ll get you to your destination.

Understanding the context

Before we get to work, I need to understand the context you operate in.

To do this, I:

> Speak to your broader stakeholders
> Conduct 360 reviews and personality assessments
> Sit down with you and your corporate sponsor (if you have one)

Get to work

My initial programme consists of 6 sessions. We typically meet on a monthly cycle for sessions of typically 60 minutes (and up to 90 minutes) each.

During a session, we will:

> Establish clear goals for the programme
> Dive into the changes you want to make
> Support each observation with pragmatic actions

Plan for the future

At the end of the initial programme, we will review where you are against your programme goals.

Next steps might include:

> Meeting with your sponsor to identify further areas of development
> Explore how coaching could help you in the future
> Set up continued monthly or quarterly sessions

FAQ

What can I expect?

I work with inspiring leaders in their field to make a positive impact for them, their business performance and often their personal stakeholders.

I always work one-to-one with my clients. Often a senior leader will come to me directly, or through a corporate, head-hunter or private office.

The knowledge and experience that I bring into the coaching conversation from 30 years as a Senior Chair & Non-Executive Board member, Private Equity Partner, and Business Founder gives me particular empathy for the challenges faced by Board level executives and senior executives stepping up the Board.

My personal style is challenging yet supportive. I am ambitious for my clients and bring my natural pace and energy to our sessions. I love big-picture goals and the pragmatism of smaller steps to back up that dream.

My goal is for you to be more successful – on your terms. That might involve improving your own or corporate performance, building and maintaining stronger relationships or balancing the demands of life and simply having more fun.

Previous clients have talked of bringing laser-like clarity of thought to complex problems and breaking them down into their constituent parts, identifying priorities, and setting clear short-term goals with manageable courses of action.

Clients appreciate my ability to be aware of patterns emerging and present them back in a way that is helpful to them. They value that I am calm, highly empathetic and can disentangle whatever it is that is on their mind whilst handling the session with authority and focus on actions.

Coaching is different to mentoring. My experience will bring a certain calibre to the conversation, but I believe in your wisdom to find outcomes and not to tell you how I think things should be done. Our work together is to access your resourcefulness, bringing together the power of a non-directive approach with the perspective of my own business experience.

As a Non-Executive Director, I have seen first-hand just how powerful this approach can be. You are much more likely to implement a solution at pace when you have developed it yourself.

The relationship between a coach and a coachee is very important. For that reason, all my coaching relationships start with a chemistry meeting for each of us to decide if we are a good fit for the other. There is no charge for this.

During the chemistry meeting, we would begin to understand the context of what it is that has brought you to coaching and what a successful programme would look like for you.

We would also agree on how best to involve their corporate sponsor and how the business imperatives can be achieved.

The coaching programme allows for a longer first coaching session to set the overarching goals for our time together, as well as start to work on some aspects of your goals. Alongside understanding the business needs, this session gives you the chance to reflect on all areas of your life and to really explore and bring clarity to what your definition of success is.

In the subsequent hourly sessions held monthly, specific goals that support your plan are considered in more detail with related actions agreed.

The sixth session will be a combination of some elements of coaching together with a review of our work together. This often includes a check-in meeting with the sponsor.
Between sessions, I am available for short calls if there is something specific on your mind that is time-sensitive.

I build long-term relationships with clients, and at the end of our initial engagement, and following the review of our work together, my clients typically move to a regular quarterly check-in supplemented by more regular sessions during moments of business change.

I offer ‘re-set days’ for clients who would prefer to kick off with a more intensive session. Often, this can lead straight into the Phase 1 Programme for support in implementing the plan we develop.

I love meeting my clients in person. However, when that is not practical for them, and with international clients, coaching sessions work really well online.

I typically work in London, but I’m happy to discuss alternative locations.
